How to Appear in ChatGPT and Gemini Answers — An AEO Guide for Saudi Businesses

Something fundamental has shifted in how people search. A growing share of customers no longer opens Google and compares ten results — they ask an assistant a direct question and take the answer as given. In that model, ranking on page one is not enough; you have to be one of the sources the answer is built from.

This is answer engine optimisation. It does not replace SEO — it builds on it, with important differences in how content is written and how data is organised. In this guide we explain how these tools select their sources, what makes your site quotable, and the practical steps to start on today.

The difference between SEO and AEO

SEO aims to place your page in a list of results that a person then chooses from. AEO aims to have your content selected, summarised and cited inside a single generated answer — in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, and Google’s own AI Overviews. The list is disappearing for many queries; the answer is what the customer sees.

The foundations are shared: a crawlable, fast site with clear, authoritative content. The differences are in emphasis. Answer engines favour content that states things directly, that is structured so a machine can extract the relevant passage, and that comes from an entity they can identify consistently across the web. Vague, keyword-stuffed or purely promotional pages are rarely quoted.

How AI tools construct an answer

Most assistants now retrieve before they write: they run searches, fetch a handful of pages, extract the passages that address the question, and compose an answer with citations. Which pages get fetched depends partly on conventional search rankings and partly on how clearly a page appears to answer the specific question.

Which passages get quoted depends on how they are written. A sentence that fully answers the question on its own, near a heading that matches the question, is far more likely to be lifted than an answer buried in a paragraph of context. The model is looking for the cleanest available statement of the fact, and it will take it from whichever site provides it.

Arabic adds a layer. Assistants answering Arabic questions retrieve Arabic sources where they exist and fall back to English ones where they do not. A Saudi business with clear, well-structured content in both languages is doubly retrievable — and in many categories, the Arabic side has almost no competition yet.

Quotable writing: the answer-first rule

Put the answer in the first sentence. Then explain. A heading that is the question, followed immediately by a complete one- or two-sentence answer, followed by supporting detail, is the format answer engines extract most reliably — and it also happens to be what impatient human readers prefer.

Define terms in standalone sentences. Use specific numbers, names and places rather than “many” and “various”. Keep one idea per paragraph. Avoid the marketing habit of withholding the point until the end. Every FAQ answer on this site follows this rule, and our content writing service applies it to service pages and articles alike.

Structured data as a machine-readable language

Schema.org markup in JSON-LD tells machines, without ambiguity, what a page is and what it contains: this is an Organisation with this name, address and phone; this is a Service offered in this area; these are the Questions and Answers on this page; this is an Article by this author on this date. Answer engines and the search indexes they rely on use it to understand and trust content.

Every page should carry the schema types that describe it, with identifiers that connect them — the article to its publisher, the service to the organisation, the FAQ to its page. Markup must match the visible content exactly; invented ratings or hidden questions are treated as spam.

Entity building: consistency across the web

Answer engines reason about entities — a business as a thing with a name, a location, services, people and a reputation — and they assemble that picture from everywhere the business appears: its website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories, press, reviews, Wikipedia-style sources. When the details agree everywhere, the entity is confident and citable. When they conflict, it is unreliable and ignored.

Use exactly one name, one address format, one phone number, one description of what you do, and repeat them consistently. Link your profiles to each other and to the site with sameAs markup. Get mentioned by third parties. Entity strength is the AEO equivalent of domain authority, and it is built the same slow way.

The llms.txt file and what it does

llms.txt is a proposed plain-text file at the root of a website that summarises what the site is, who it is for, and where its most important pages are — written for language models rather than for search crawlers. It is a convention, not a standard: Google does not use it, and adoption among AI companies is uneven.

It costs little to publish and does no harm, so it is worth adding as a concise, honest overview with links to your key service, pricing and FAQ pages. Treat it as a small supporting signal rather than the core of AEO — the content and structure of the pages themselves matter far more.

Why FAQ and pricing pages matter disproportionately

The questions people ask assistants are overwhelmingly practical: how much does it cost, how long does it take, what is included, what is the difference between X and Y, which is better for my situation. Pages that answer those questions directly — a real FAQ page, a pricing page with explained ranges, comparison articles — are the pages most often retrieved and quoted.

Most business websites hide this information or leave it out, which is precisely why the sites that publish it dominate AI answers in their category. Publish your pricing logic, your process, your timelines and your honest answers to common objections. It builds trust with humans and makes you the default source for machines.

How to measure your visibility in answer engines

There is no Search Console for ChatGPT yet. The practical method: write down the twenty questions your prospective customers would ask an assistant — including your city and category — and ask each assistant those questions monthly, logging whether you are mentioned, cited, or absent, and which competitors appear instead.

In your analytics, segment referral traffic from AI tool domains and watch its trend. Track brand-name searches, which rise when assistants recommend you. Combine all of this with conventional SEO measurement, because the two move together. If you would like a baseline of where you currently appear, ask us for an AEO visibility check.

Frequently asked questions about AEO

No. The technical foundation and content quality are shared between them, and answer engines partly rely on search results themselves. AEO is an additional layer on top of sound SEO, not a replacement for it.

Ask it directly, using the questions your prospective customer would ask, repeat this periodically and log the results. Also monitor referral traffic from AI tool domains in your analytics.

It is a strategic choice. Blocking protects your content from training use but also removes you from the answers. For a service business seeking customers, visibility is usually the greater prize.
